In the poem “A Story” by Li-Young Lee, the central tension
is the father’s love. The child asks for a new story to be told. The child just
sits there while the dad tries to think of a new story to tell. The father is
too caught up in thinking about the future of his child leaving and not wanting
to hear any stories that he forgets about the story to tell his child now. The
flashforward within the story shows the tension that will be caused if the dad does not tell a
new story. The father’s love creates two things; it creates the vision you get
of how much the father loves his child and it also creates the tension between
the father and the child from not telling a story.
