Gender Roles Based on Time Periods

Ismene upholds her role as a typical woman by being quiet, demure and more reserved than Antigone. On the other hand, Antigone challenges and overthrows her role as a typical woman due to her rebellious actions. The Hunger Games shows Katniss as a strong female figure due to her rebellion against the wrongs of her society. Anthem shows The Golden One as somewhat a strong female figure because she had the courage to follow Equality into the unknown but the strength of the Golden One is somewhat muted as she doesn’t publicly rebel. Antigone portrays men and women as their expected gender roles with the exception of Antigone being the main character who changes that idea. Anthem still shows male dominance over females but it is displayed in a muted fashion and is not a main theme of the novel itself. The Hunger Games, being a modern form of literature, shows females as strong individuals due to society’s current view of women being equals to men. Based on the eras each novel was written in, their stories do portray men and women following their gender roles in consideration to the time period.    - Shannon Robinson

  1. I love your anailical comments and use of vocabulary that I have to look up. I really do learn alot from listening to you. What do you think Sophocles gloal was when he wrote the play Antogine?

    1. Thank you for the complement! I would have to theorize that Sophocles's goal when he wrote the play Antigone would be to introduce a new view of women into his society's literary culture. Based on the era and knowledge of Greek mythology, the archetype of a strong, independent and determined MORTAL character is missing; however, in mythology, characters such as Athena or Artemis are both women who are independent and intelligent but are not human mortals and are instead goddesses. By writing Antigone Sophocles has accomplished the goal of introducing a new female archetype into literature by making Antigone a mortal woman with positive qualities.

  3. I totally agree with your first sentence about how Ismene is the expected woman and Antigone is not. It sums up the first part of the question very eloquently.
