One theme in taming of the shrew is how social roles can affect a charters happiness. For example, when Katherine gets married to Pertruchio her social status goes from a young maiden-in-waiting to a married woman who should support her husband’s decisions. Kate and Petruchio are both very strong minded people and in this play they constantly bump heads. With that being said, because she doesn't live up to the behavior standards of her society of being a perfect wife, she is alienated. Katherine had to understand that now that she is married she has to take a step back and let her husband act the way he does even if she doesn't like it. Readers can tell that this makes her very upset but towards the end of the play, she eventually gives in.
