The story "Skinny Trees" uses an extended metaphor to compare the trees in the lawn to the girl. The trees in the stroy show that the girl and her family are constantly struggling to sustain a working house and provide food for the whole family, uncovering the theme that people are never to give up. In the text, the story says, "Four skinny trees wiht skinny necks and pointy elbows like mine", which shows that her family does not have much foood or money to keep them average weight, and instead are skinny, or less nourished than most others. It also says at the end, "Four who grew dispit concrete. foru wo reach and do not forget to reach." This statement was put at the end of the story on purpose in order to signify that after all the hardship that was explained in the begining both the trees keep growing and the family keeps working.
