Respect for the Dishonored

"And she cried out a sharp, piercing cry, like a bird come back to an empty nest (Sophocles,80)." This is the governing metaphor shown in this section of reading. It displays the emotions running through Antigone as she witnessed the body of her dead brother stripped bare. She was feeling anger and disappointment just as a mother bird would feel if she came home to find all of her babies gone. Losing her brother was already a tragic moment for Antigone, but seeing him lay there lifeless with no respect or honor was far too much for her. Just like in the rest of the book, she shows how much she cares about her sibling so this is quite a significant point in the story. She is building up to the moment when she will do anything to make sure this man will get a proper burial. Antigone is foreshadowing that later she might even die in order to show respect to her family. The later themes will show integrity and kindness to Antigone's character. This scene displays this through her weeping and mourning for her dead brother.
