The animal
The motif in Siddhartha that has been recurring in the novel Siddhartha is animals. Such as how the book shows whether he is becoming something else or how someone’s personality is how the motif of animals is being shown. “Siddhartha realized that something had left him, like the old skin that a snake sheds. Something was no longer in him, something that had accompanied him right through his youth and was part of him.”(pg. 37, Siddhartha) The motif explains how he is like a snake when he loses something that was dear to him. It shows how Siddhartha’s goal cannot be achieved without knowledge. His main goal is to get more knowledge that no Brahmin can get which is why he is on his journey.
“ During the that time he had a dream. Kamala kept a small rare songbird in a small golden cage. It was about this bird that he dreamt. The little bird was dead and lay stiff on the floor. He took it out, held it a moment and threw it away on the road.”( Pg.82 Siddhartha) The quote tells of how when he threw this bird into the road he has lost himself. He has lost the good and value in himself because of how the bird was meant to be him. When he threw it he could see the bird was his morals and his goal and how he is throwing it all away by staying here.
” When she heard the first news of Siddhartha’s disappearance, she went to the window where she kept a rare songbird in a golden cage. She opened the door of the cage, took the bird and let it fly away.” (pg. 85 Siddhartha) The bird represents Siddhartha and when Kamala lets the bird go she’s letting him go and herself. She is letting everything go that was Siddhartha which is why she let the bird leave, which represented Siddhartha’s dissaprence.
I agree with your points, and you have nice quotes to back up your point.
