One theme in Taming of the Shrew is the huge amount of
effort one will exert for their true love. Lucentio, one of Bianca’s suitors, did
3 big things to make sure that his true love Bianca is his. Page 20 line 149
Lucentio tells his servant, “I never thought it possible or likely. But see,
while idly I stood looking on, I found the effect of love-in-idleness”, “I saw
sweet beauty in her face” (Pg. 21 Line 168), “I saw her coral lips to move and
with her breath she did perfume the air. Sacred and sweet was all I saw in
her.” (Pg. 21 Line 174) These were all
declarations of Lucentio’s true love at first sight for Bianca. Tranio, his
servant, replies “If you love the maid, bend thoughts and wits to achieve her.”
(Pg. 21 Line 178) He is telling Lucentio that he needs to come up with a
conning plan quick for what he loves. Lucentio brings up the point that
Bianca’s father took care into getting her good teachers (Pg. 21 Line 185).
This sparks an idea in Tranio’s head “You will be the schoolmaster and
undertake the teaching of the maid.” (Pg. 22 Line 192) So, Lucentio fallows
through with his time and spends more time with Bianca. He undermines the attempts
of the 2 other suitors for Bianca, Gremio and Hortensio, by letting Hortensio
join him in as Bianca’s music teacher. But, as Hortensio is in the other room
tuning his instrument, Lucentio woos Bianca over by stating his love for her in
Latin, “Hic ibat, as I told you before, Simois, I am Lucentio, hic est, son of
Vicentio of Pisa, Seigeia tellus, disguised thus to get your love, Hic
steterat, and that Lucentio comes a wooing, Priami, is my man Tranio, regia,
bearing my port, cesla senis, that we might beguile in the pantaloon” (Pg. 53
Line 31) Lucentio devises this whole plan just to woo Bianca over. But now his
only problem is that his father isn’t here to make the marriage agreement with
Bianca’s father Baptista. To solve this problem Lucentio pays some old man off
the street to act the part. Just another act that Lucentio performs for his
love. Luckily his father appears and the marriage can be made official.
The theme, the huge amount of effort a one will exert for their
true love, can be found in the Hunger Games. Katness grows to love Pita. After
she finds Pita in the mud she discovers that he has an infection and is in
serious need of medication. So, she kisses Pita, knowing that the other boy who
loves her, Gale, is sitting at home watching her do this. Yet, by doing this it
gets her sponsors and the ability to go to the cornucopia to get the medicine.
When Katness is there she almost gets killed. She makes it back to their
hideout just in time to shoot Pita with the medicine he needs and then to pass
out from the loss of blood because of her wounds. So she completes a few difficult
tasks just to save her true love Pita, just as Lucentio completed several tasks
to woo Bianca.
I think this is a great theme for Taming of the Shrew. I really saw it clearly when you connected it to the Hunger Games.
