Taming of the Shrew:
Often, people would do anything because of greed
A
universalizing idea in Taming of the Shrew is that people often would do
anything because they are greedy. A part in the play that emphasizes this theme
is in Act 2 when Petruchio asks Kate to marry him only for her riches. He didn’t
care what Kate’s personality was because she was rich and he would get her
money. This is an example of greed because Petruchio was very shallow and only
cared about him and the money that he would get. Another part in the play that
conveys this theme is in Act 3 when Lucentio dresses up as Bianca’s teacher to
get to know her better so that he can wed her. This is an example of greed
because Lucentio was taking away from Bianca’s learning just to benefit himself
in getting to know her. In Anthem, this theme is displayed because the Society
is greedy because they won’t accept the invention of the light that Equality
made, because they would rather stay the same than help the people. This is a
universal them that is displayed in the whole play in Taming of the Shrew, and
also in other works such as Anthem.

ReplyDeleteI like the way you tie the theme with a universalizing theme. I also like how you used Anthem as your expample to back up that there is not only one text with that same theme.
