“A Story”
Loss of love
In the “A
story” Li-Young-Lee makes a tension of loss of love using the literary devices
such as metaphors and Flashback. Li-Young-Lee uses metaphor use to describe the
feeling between the father and son such as “Are you a god the man screams, that
I sit mute before you? Am I a god that I should never disappoint?”(A
Story) The metaphor usage is telling
that the father is trying to say to the son why he won’t respond back and not
listen to his words. He is also saying that he wishes he could do more for the boy
but sadly he didn’t. For Flash back he
uses” In a room full of books in a world of stories, he can recall not one, and
soon, he thinks, the boy will give up on his father.”(A Story) What is says is
that the boy will give up on him because he didn’t do much for him and he could’ve
treated him better to what the text says. Which is how Li-Young-Lee uses the
literary devices to make the tension of loss of love in the “A Story” by
telling how the father did not try and how their family love was fading away
