Undervalued Duke

The Trivial incidents that produced this response of the duke is that he was undervalued by the duchess. When the duke talks about stooping in the poem he is talking about how she treated his gift of a 900 year old to any gifts from other men. The duke is talking about how the painting is of his last wife looking as if she was alive. This to me sounds like there’s a reason she died so young. He is saying he is disgusted by how she treated other men the same as him. He says when he walks past the duchess he receives a beautiful smile but then he asks what man doesn’t receive the same smile from her. So in the poem he is telling someone while looking at the picture how his last duchess disgusted him and he most likely killed her. The reason he killed her or she died is because he didn’t like the way she treated other men , similar to him.

  1. I agree with how you said that the duke feels underminded by the duchess.
