The Dukes Jealousy and Mistreatment

3. The Duke eliminated (divorced? sent to a convent? had executed or poisoned?) his last duchess because (he felt) she undervalued him and treated him much as she treated other men. Which trivial incidents in particular seem to have produced this response in the Duke?

The Duke has felt jealous insulted by how she has treated him and by being judgmental about how he was like any other man.” She thanked men, good! but thanked Somehow I don’t know how as if she ranked my gift of a nine hundred years old name with anybody’s gift.”(My Last Duchess, Robert Browning) He is saying that he has seen with his own eyes that she would thank men but never thank him and to him he felt jealousy. Due to what he has seen he felt insulted of how she never thanked him of how he was. “Too easily impressed; she liked what’er she looked on, and her looks went everywhere.”(My Last Duchess, Robert Browning) The Duke felt undervalued and very insecure by how she treated other men. She was to easily impressed and he saw that she would look “What’er” which therefore gave him a bit of insecurity. Due to his jealousy of her thanking men and not caring for him he felt mistreated. The incident that had a huge effect on him was that she was thanking men and so called caring for them. When he saw this he felt that his duchess did not care nor want him anymore or to even thank him for his so called “gifts” that he has said. It drove him to the edge and he could no longer take it anymore so therefore he has executed or poisoned her because he has thought that their love was gone and he has thought that was very inconsiderate to him. Which is why she has died to due duke either executing or poisoning her.
