Alonzo Smith
The Duke reveals himself to be an emotionally cold, calculating, materialistic, haughty, aristocratic connoisseur; on the positive side, he is a patron of such artists as Fra Pandolf and Claus of Innsbruck (both fictional). What does the duke value in art? What does he see as his role in the creation of great art?
The duke has a view on art, like many of art collectors, he gets it to show it off and show off how much money he has. He doesn’t so much care about the art as much for making his visitor feel jealous and demoralized so he can feel better on how his wife treated him the same as any other guy on the street. he says to his visitor,"Will't please you sit and look at her?" he is just trying to show off his art to him. The duke sees his role in the great creation of art as the provider of money and supplies. For the return; he will get the art pieces to show off to all of his family, friends, and guests. So in the end the duke is a cold hearted, jealous, egomaniac; who enjoys showing off his money through the expensive art taste to guests in his house.
I never thought of it this way, but I see your point which is a good one.

How did you conclude that the duke is a "cold hearted, jealous, egomaniac"?
ReplyDeleteHow did you conclude that the duke wanted to make the people he showed his art to feel "jealous and demoralized"?
