The
aspects of Equality in Anthem fit the
Myth Cycle’s three main stages. The first stage in the Myth Cycle is the call
to adventure; at the near beginning of the novel Anthem, Equality sees a transgressor being burn at the stake for
speaking the unspeakable word. In this scene he sees the expression on the
transgressor’s face and immediately knows that he must look for what he wants
Equality to know. But he refuses the call, (step 2) by doing the job and life
that was assigned to him, even though he does not wish to be a street sweeper.
Then he receives and or finds the aid (step 3) of his cave. Crossing the
threshold into the unknown world (step 4) is when Equality begins to work on
his glass box and his writing, but as he is also breaking laws as he does this
(entering the road of trials and difficult tasks, step 5). He then meets the goddess
(step 6) in this case The Golden One. Equality then reaches the bottom (step
7). He is punished and is almost killed when he will not tell where he had been
when he got home late. (Step 8) The blessing is when he realizes that his society
is wrong and he runs away into the Uncharted Forest. Equality then receives a gift (step 9) when
The Golden One/Liberty shows up and they are happy. After finding a house from
the unmentionable times, Equality refuses to go back (step 10) to his society.
Then he takes the magic flight (step 11) when he reads the first word, “I” in
one of the books he found in the house’s library. Equality then decides to
change the world (step 12) with this new “god of I” by recruiting his friends.
Finally he prepares for the next call (step 13). He knows that there will be a
war and he will be prepared for it.
